Decision Model and Notation (DMN) open standard makes decision modeling accessible, but innovation should N🚫T stop there!
✨Decision Model and Notation (DMN) has been out for several years now. Not many vendors have adopted this open standard because it is very tough to implement. Conformance Level 3 (CL3) is a fully executable decision model and, in my opinion, the only conformance level that has practical values.
⚠️For legacy decision management and business rules vendors, as they already have built their solutions, it will be a bottom-to-top redesign effort. Many Business Rules Management Systems (BRMS) and Decision Management Suites (DMS) use the rules approach. It means they allow users to create a repository of all business rules and then start managing them. They welcome you to the “Big bucket of rules problem”!
Decision Model and Notation (DMN) has a different design. It utilizes Decision Centric approach® as it is a standard for decision modeling. This approach has several benefits over the traditional rules approach:
🔹Starting decision design at a conceptual level (i.e., Decision Requirements Diagram or DRD) right off the bat reduces the complexity of managing individual business rules.
🔹Providing open standards from the Object Management Group (OMG) group enables interoperability between solutions.
The language and models of Decision Model and Notation (DMN) are not tied to specific vendors, which mitigates vendor lock-in risks.
🔹Ease of mind to adopt a decision modeling as part of enterprise excellence discipline to serve a higher purpose rather than just a business rule engine
🔹Establishing a standard language for #data and #analytics leaders to elevate the conversation with business
These are just the benefits of having open standards, but there are more benefits with the shift from managing rules to managing decisions. This is the space where vendors with greater vision can shine:
🔹Integrated and composite AI techniques such as #businessrules #optimization #machinelearning
🔹Event-driven architecture based on decision units as part of a reusable higher-level decision graph
🔹Unified and integrated AI orchestrator around business decisions coordinating between multimodel agents
🔹Enforcing business rules on the results of decisions
🚀Many nowadays talk about gaudrailing decisions made by #AI utilizing techniques such as #aigen #llms in enterprise settings. The Decision Model and Notation (DMN) should become the cornerstone of these guard rails in every #AI, data-driven and #decisionintelligence solution in #banking #insurance #financialservices #government #health #education and more!
